The Delhi High Court on Friday issued notices to the Union government and social media platform X on a petition challenging the suspension of the X account of the self-styled Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
The petition was filed by Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the online platform, after the party’s X handle was blocked by the social media company. The account had gained significant traction online and emerged as a viral phenomenon, particularly among young social media users.
The legal challenge comes after the platform faced multiple setbacks in recent weeks. Apart from the suspension of its X account, the website reportedly being used for membership registrations and campaign activities was also taken offline.
Dipke had earlier criticised the BJP-led Central government over the shutdown of the platform, alleging that the action was arbitrary. He also claimed that nearly 10 lakh people had registered as members of the online movement, which gained popularity through political satire, memes, and social commentary aimed at public institutions and governance issues.
The Cockroach Janta Party attracted widespread attention after launching a digital campaign that resonated strongly with Gen Z and millennial users across the country. The campaign gained momentum following public discussions surrounding remarks attributed to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant involving the term “cockroach.”
The issue subsequently sparked extensive debate on social media platforms. Later, Chief Justice Surya Kant clarified his remarks and stated that he held deep respect for India’s youth, amid continuing discussions online.
By issuing notices, the Delhi High Court has sought responses from both the Union government and X regarding the suspension of the account. The matter is expected to be heard further after the concerned parties submit their replies.
The case is likely to attract attention due to its implications for online political expression, digital platforms, and freedom of speech in the social media era.
