Assam is charting an ambitious path toward energy self-reliance, with the state government aiming to transform Assam into a power-surplus state within the next five years through a combination of large-scale power generation projects and renewable energy initiatives.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state has unveiled a comprehensive energy roadmap designed to significantly enhance electricity generation capacity and reduce dependence on power procured from outside the region.
At the core of the strategy are two major projects currently under development. These include 3,200 MW of new thermal power generation capacity and a 4,200 MW pumped hydropower project, both of which are expected to substantially strengthen Assam’s power infrastructure and meet the state’s growing energy requirements.
Assam is not just generating power, it is building a brighter future for every family.

Alongside conventional power generation, the government is accelerating its clean energy transition through an extensive rooftop solar programme. The initiative aims to cover more than 1.25 lakh households across the state, promoting decentralized renewable energy production and reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
Officials said Assam has already added 410 MW of renewable energy capacity to its power grid, reflecting the state’s increasing focus on sustainable and environmentally responsible growth.
According to the government’s projections, the combined contribution of thermal, hydropower, and solar energy projects will not only meet future domestic demand but could eventually position Assam as a net exporter of electricity to neighbouring states in the Northeast.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has described the initiative as a key component of Assam’s vision for “energy Atmanirbharta” or energy self-reliance. He emphasized that strengthening the state’s power sector is essential for economic growth, industrial development, and improving the quality of life for citizens.
The roadmap marks a significant shift in Assam’s energy policy, moving away from dependence on central allocations and inter-state power purchases toward a model built on locally generated electricity from both conventional and renewable sources.
Officials believe the strategy will play a crucial role in supporting future industrial expansion, attracting investments, and ensuring reliable power supply for households and businesses across the state.
