Indian National Congress has appointed Wazed Ali Choudhury as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly and Joy Prakash Das as the Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP).
The announcement was communicated by AICC general secretary K. C. Venugopal through a press release issued on May 26.
The appointments come after a series of internal discussions within the party regarding the leadership structure of the Congress Legislature Party during the ongoing session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly.
Earlier, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi had stated that the final decision regarding the CLP leadership would be taken by the All India Congress Committee after consultations with party MLAs and central observers.
Congress legislators had also held internal meetings in Guwahati amid growing political interest surrounding the selection of the CLP leader. The leadership appointments are expected to play an important role in strengthening the party’s coordination and legislative strategy inside the Assembly.
The Congress leadership structure in the Assembly is also expected to shape the party’s role in opposition politics and its approach on key issues during the ongoing Assembly sessions.
