A young man lost his life in a tragic road accident near the Assam Legislative Assembly in Dispur after his motorcycle reportedly crashed into an electric pole and caught fire late at night.
According to preliminary reports, the victim was riding a Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycle from the Ganeshguri side at high speed when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle near the Assembly premises. The motorcycle reportedly rammed into an electric pole with tremendous force, following which the vehicle immediately burst into flames.
The rider suffered severe burn injuries to his face and body and died on the spot after being engulfed in the fire along with the motorcycle.
The deceased was identified as Basab Raj Chetia, a resident of Dhemaji district in Assam.
The incident created panic in the area as locals and passersby gathered near the accident site shortly after the crash. Police personnel reportedly reached the scene quickly and initiated necessary procedures.
Local residents, however, alleged that the ambulance took considerable time to arrive despite the accident occurring in a high-security zone near the Assembly complex. The delay drew criticism from people present at the scene, who raised concerns regarding emergency response arrangements in the city.
The severely damaged motorcycle was later removed from the spot after the fire was brought under control. Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident to determine the exact circumstances that led to the crash.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over over-speeding and late-night road safety in Guwahati, particularly along major city roads and flyovers where several serious accidents have been reported in recent months.
