A late-night road accident on the Bhangagarh Flyover in Guwahati left one person critically injured after a speeding Hyundai Venue allegedly crashed into a Maruti Swift from behind on Tuesday night.
According to preliminary information, the Hyundai Venue was reportedly travelling at high speed when it rammed into the Swift on the busy flyover, causing severe damage to both vehicles. The impact of the collision triggered panic in the area as police and emergency services rushed to the spot shortly after the accident.
The driver of the Maruti Swift sustained serious injuries in the crash and was immediately shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for emergency treatment. Officials said his condition was critical at the time of admission.
Police officials who reached the scene reportedly recovered liquor bottles from inside the Hyundai Venue, raising strong suspicions that the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol during the accident. Authorities are also investigating whether over-speeding and reckless driving contributed to the crash.
Sources said two other occupants — a young man and a woman — were travelling in the Hyundai Venue at the time of the incident. However, detailed information regarding their injuries or condition was not immediately available.
The collision briefly disrupted traffic movement on the flyover as rescue operations and vehicle clearance work continued late into the night. Police personnel later removed the damaged vehicles from the road and restored normal traffic flow.
Occupants of the vehicles involved reportedly described the incident as a terrifying experience, with eyewitnesses stating that the collision occurred with tremendous force.
Police have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the accident. The incident has once again raised concerns over increasing cases of reckless and suspected drunk driving in Guwahati, particularly during late-night hours. Residents have urged authorities to strengthen traffic enforcement and conduct stricter checks to prevent similar incidents in the city.
