Guwahati may soon be known as the “Purple City” as the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) is planning a unique city beautification initiative aimed at giving the state capital a fresh and distinctive identity.
Under the proposed plan, various parts of the city, including shops, boundary walls, public buildings, gates, and other urban structures, are expected to be painted in shades of purple. The initiative is inspired by the vibrant bloom of parrot flowers, which are expected to become a central theme of the city’s new visual appeal.
Officials said the proposal is part of a broader effort to enhance Guwahati’s aesthetic character and create a more attractive urban environment for residents and visitors alike.
The ambitious makeover is expected to transform several prominent locations across the city, introducing a unified colour scheme designed to strengthen Guwahati’s identity while promoting civic pride and tourism.
According to the proposal, the city will be decorated in colours inspired by kopou Phool, giving public spaces a distinctive and visually appealing appearance. The initiative is being viewed as an innovative step by the municipal corporation to redefine the city’s image through creative urban design.
While detailed implementation plans are yet to be announced, the proposal has already generated interest among residents, with many eager to see how the transformation will reshape the look of Assam’s largest city.
If implemented, Guwahati would join a growing list of cities around the world that have adopted unique colour-based themes to enhance their cultural and visual identity.
