The Dima Hasao District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has issued a public safety advisory for residents living along the banks and downstream stretches of the Kapili River after seven gates of the Khandong Reservoir were opened due to rising water levels triggered by continuous heavy rainfall.

According to the district administration, water is being released through the spillway gates of the Khandong Dam in a phased manner to ensure the safety and stability of the reservoir. The move comes amid persistent rainfall in the region, which has led to a steady increase in the reservoir’s water level.

The DDMA has urged residents residing in areas along the Kapili River and downstream locations to remain alert and exercise caution during the period of water discharge. People have been specifically advised not to enter the river or engage in any activities involving river water until the situation stabilises.

Authorities have also appealed to residents to relocate livestock, vehicles and other valuable belongings away from riverbanks as a precautionary measure against possible flooding or sudden increases in water flow. The administration has stressed the importance of monitoring official updates regarding the number of reservoir gates opened and the volume of water being released.

Officials stated that the flow of water towards downstream areas, including Lanka, will also be influenced by operational decisions taken at the Lower Kopili Hydro Electric Project (LKHEP). As a result, residents in affected regions have been asked to remain informed through official communication channels, including mobile alerts and WhatsApp updates.

To ensure preparedness for any emergency situation, the District Emergency Operations Centre (DEOC) has activated its helpline services and is maintaining close monitoring of the situation. Emergency response teams remain on alert as authorities continue to assess weather conditions and water levels.
