The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Assam government on the bail plea filed by Shyamkanu Mahanta, who was arrested in connection with the alleged suspicious death case involving noted Assamese musician Zubeen Garg. Mahanta has remained in judicial custody for nearly nine months, and the matter is now set to be heard again in the last week of July.
The notice was issued after Mahanta approached the apex court challenging the rejection of his bail application by the Gauhati High Court in May 2026. The Supreme Court has sought the Assam government's response before taking up the matter for further consideration.
A Bench of Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Joymalya Bagchi took up the matter and issued notice to the Assam government on Mahanta’s bail plea. The Bench granted the State government three weeks to file its response and posted the matter for further hearing at the end of July. Mahanta has been in custody for nearly nine months after his bail application was rejected by the Gauhati High Court in May 2026.
The case has attracted significant public attention in Assam since the investigation was launched. According to investigators, Mahanta was arrested as part of an ongoing probe into circumstances surrounding the alleged suspicious death of Zubeen Garg. The investigation has involved multiple rounds of questioning, collection of evidence and examination of individuals linked to the case.
Following his arrest, Mahanta moved the Gauhati High Court seeking regular bail, arguing for his release while the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings continued. However, the High Court rejected the plea in May this year, after which he approached the Supreme Court for relief.
