Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is expected to undertake her first official visit to India from July 1 to 3, with New Delhi likely to remain the sole venue for official engagements during the trip.
While Guwahati was considered as a possible destination and was offered to the Japanese side, officials indicate that the visit is now expected to be confined to the national capital due to scheduling constraints and logistical considerations. Prime Minister Takaichi is understood to have a limited window available for international travel because of ongoing domestic commitments, including parliamentary responsibilities in Japan.
The visit is expected to feature bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior Indian officials, focusing on strengthening cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, technology, semiconductors, supply-chain resilience, infrastructure development and defence collaboration. A business delegation comprising leading Japanese industry representatives is also expected to accompany the Prime Minister.
The possibility of hosting a high-profile India-Japan engagement in Guwahati had generated interest in Assam, reflecting the Northeast's growing strategic and economic importance in India's Act East policy. However, officials have indicated that the tight schedule and additional arrangements required for travel outside Delhi made the proposed extension difficult to accommodate.
The development also recalls a similar episode in 2019 when the annual India-Japan Summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was scheduled to be held in Guwahati. The summit was ultimately cancelled amid widespread protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in Assam.
Despite the likely cancellation of the Guwahati leg, India and Japan continue to enjoy a robust "Special Strategic and Global Partnership." Japan remains one of India's largest development partners, contributing significantly to major infrastructure projects, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor, industrial corridors and urban development initiatives.
