A 35-year-old migrant worker from Assam was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district following an incident involving a local woman, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Prosenjit Das, a resident of Kamrup district in Assam. According to police, Das had recently arrived in Tiruvallur along with five other workers in search of employment opportunities and had rented accommodation in the area.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred on Friday when Prosenjit, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, approached a woman who was alone at her residence and asked for water.
Police said that when the woman declined and attempted to close the door, Prosenjit allegedly tried to behave inappropriately with her. The woman reportedly managed to shut the door and move inside the house.
Investigators further stated that Prosenjit allegedly damaged windowpanes of the house with a knife following the confrontation.
The woman subsequently contacted her relatives for assistance. Soon after, a group comprising relatives and local villagers reportedly confronted Prosenjit and assaulted him.
According to police, the assault resulted in severe injuries, and Prosenjit later succumbed to his wounds.
Law enforcement authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are examining the circumstances that led to the mob attack. Police are also working to identify all individuals involved in the assault.
Officials said further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over mob violence and the safety of migrant workers living and working in different parts of the country.
