Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that the Assam Council of Ministers will be expanded on June 5, marking the first cabinet expansion of the BJP-led government’s new term.
Sharing the development on social media, the Chief Minister stated, “I am pleased to inform that the Council of Ministers of the Government of Assam will be expanded on June 5, 2026.”
However, he did not disclose the number of ministers to be inducted or the names of those likely to take oath.
The expansion comes less than a month after Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term on May 12. The swearing-in ceremony was administered by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers, chief ministers of NDA-ruled states, and other senior dignitaries.
Alongside Sarma, four ministers had taken oath in the initial phase of government formation. They included Ajanta Neog and Rameswar Teli from the BJP, Atul Bora from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and Charan Boro from the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returned to power in Assam for a third consecutive term after securing a decisive mandate in the Assembly elections. The alliance won 102 seats in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly, with the BJP securing 82 seats, while its allies AGP and BPF won 10 seats each.
Political observers expect the upcoming expansion to provide broader regional, social, and organisational representation within the government while strengthening the administration for its new term.
The June 5 ceremony is expected to formally induct several new faces into the state cabinet, although official details are yet to be announced.
