A formal complaint has been filed before the National Commission for Women against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging defamation and public harassment during the recent Assembly election campaign.
The complaint was lodged by Sujata Gurung Choudhury, a resident of Panbazar and mother of Kunki Choudhury, who contested from the Middle Guwahati Assembly constituency as a candidate of the Asom Jatiya Parishad.
In her submission, Sujata Gurung Choudhury stated that she is not directly involved in politics but was drawn into public controversy due to her daughter’s candidature. She alleged that during the election campaign, the Chief Minister made several public statements about her in media interactions and public meetings.
According to the complaint, she was accused of hurting religious sentiments, expressing sympathy towards Pakistan, supporting “anti-national” elements and consuming beef. She termed these allegations as false, baseless and politically motivated, claiming they were intended to damage her reputation and indirectly target her daughter.
Referring to a photograph that circulated widely on social media, she clarified that it was taken at the International Church of Cannabis in Denver and that the object shown was an artistic prop, not food. She said documentation from Elevation Ministries confirmed that the item was used as a photography prop for visitors.
The complainant further alleged that her private photographs, including those with her minor son, were shared online without consent, leading to harassment, abusive commentary and circulation of manipulated and AI-generated content.
She said the incident caused severe emotional distress to her family, particularly affecting her child, and described it as a violation of dignity, privacy and personal safety. She has urged the commission to take immediate action in the matter.
Copies of the complaint have also been sent to the Assam Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police and the chairperson of the Assam State Commission for Women.
