In a tribute to Assam’s rich cultural heritage, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has developed a dedicated cultural venue at Maligaon, naming it the “Zubeen Garg Railway Bihutoli” in honour of renowned Assamese artist Zubeen Garg.
The newly built Bihutoli has been envisioned as a permanent space for hosting cultural gatherings and celebrations, reflecting the enduring influence of Zubeen Garg on Assam’s artistic and musical landscape.
According to NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the venue is equipped with modern facilities, including:
- A permanent stage
- Dining hall
- Toilet complex
- Community space
- Boundary wall
- All-weather ground
The infrastructure is designed to support large-scale cultural events throughout the year.
The venue will host the annual Rongali Bihu celebrations organised by the Pandu Bihu Sanmilani, Maligaon, from April 14 to 17, marking the Assamese New Year festivities.
Ahead of the celebrations, a pre-Bihu inauguration event was held at the site, attended by NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava. The programme featured vibrant Bihu performances and saw participation from railway officials, local residents, and cultural enthusiasts.
Adding an emotional touch, Palmee Borthakur was present at the event and expressed gratitude on behalf of the family for the recognition given to the celebrated artist.
Railway officials noted that naming the Bihutoli after Zubeen Garg is a tribute to his immense contribution to Assam’s cultural identity, especially during Rongali Bihu — one of the state’s most significant and joyous festivals.
The initiative is expected to strengthen cultural engagement in the region while providing a dedicated platform for artists and communities to celebrate Assam’s traditions.
