The Assam government has launched the ‘e-Zero FIR’ initiative, a new mechanism designed to ensure faster action against cyber fraud and improve the recovery of money lost in online scams.
Announcing the rollout on Tuesday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Assam is among the first states in the country to implement the system. The initiative allows cyber financial fraud complaints registered through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) or the cybercrime helpline number 1930 to be automatically converted into First Information Reports (FIRs).
What is the e-Zero FIR System?
The e-Zero FIR system is a technology-driven mechanism that enables cybercrime complaints to be registered as FIRs without delays arising from jurisdictional issues. Traditionally, victims often had to approach local police stations and complete additional procedures before a formal FIR could be registered. The new system seeks to eliminate these hurdles by automatically initiating the legal process once certain criteria are met.
Under the initiative, cyber financial fraud complaints involving losses of more than ₹10 lakh will be automatically converted into Zero FIRs. A Zero FIR can be registered irrespective of where the offence occurred and can later be transferred to the appropriate police station for investigation.
How Will It Help Victims?
Officials say the system is expected to significantly reduce response time in cybercrime cases. Faster registration of FIRs will allow law enforcement agencies to begin investigations immediately, increasing the chances of freezing fraudulent transactions and recovering stolen funds before they are moved or withdrawn.
The initiative is particularly important in cyber fraud cases, where quick action is often critical to tracing transactions and preventing further losses.
Assam Among Early Adopters
Chief Minister Sarma said the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a “Cyber Secure Bharat” and reflects the government's commitment to strengthening cybercrime response mechanisms.
He also credited Union Home Minister Amit Shah for guiding the initiative and praised Assam Police for ensuring its swift implementation.
According to the Chief Minister, the system will make the process of reporting cybercrime more citizen-friendly while helping police agencies respond more effectively to financial frauds. The government believes the initiative will strengthen public confidence in cybercrime reporting and provide better protection against the growing threat of online scams.
With cyber fraud cases increasing across the country, the launch of the e-Zero FIR system marks a significant step towards improving digital security and ensuring quicker legal action for victims in Assam.
