West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday announced ₹10 crore in financial assistance for flood relief efforts in Assam from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The announcement was made during a special session of the West Bengal Assembly as Assam continues to deal with the impact of severe flooding.
The assistance is intended to support relief efforts in Assam amid the ongoing flood situation. The announcement comes as flood-affected communities in the state continue to require support and assistance.
Reacting to the announcement, West Bengal minister Swapan Dasgupta described the decision as a symbolic gesture reflecting the close relationship between West Bengal and Assam, as well as other states in the eastern region.
“This is a symbolic step... Our relations are very close, and we share some similarities with all the states in the eastern region. Earlier, there had been unnecessary bitterness with Odisha, Assam, Bihar, and Jharkhand... But today we are starting a new chapter of work,” Dasgupta said.
The announcement of the ₹10 crore assistance marks West Bengal’s contribution towards the relief efforts in flood-hit Assam. The support from the state’s Chief Minister’s Relief Fund comes amid the continuing flood crisis in Assam, where several areas have been affected by the deluge.
The decision was announced during a special sitting of the West Bengal Assembly, with the assistance being positioned as a gesture of support for Assam during the ongoing crisis.
Dasgupta also emphasised the broader relationship between West Bengal and the states of the eastern region. He said the latest move represented an effort to begin a new chapter of cooperation after what he described as unnecessary bitterness between the states in the past.
