Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma used his address at the Republic Summit 2026 to outline his vision for the future of Eastern and Northeastern India, while also raising concerns over demographic changes in border states and the need for sustained economic development in the region.
During his speech, Sarma stressed the importance of protecting the demographic balance of border states, describing the issue as one that goes beyond political considerations. He argued that demographic challenges in Eastern and Northeastern India require serious attention and asserted that maintaining demographic stability is essential for long-term social and political balance.
Referring to Assam’s demographic composition, the Chief Minister said the state is witnessing significant changes and emphasised the need for continued efforts to curb illegal infiltration while preserving stability. He maintained that demographic concerns should be addressed through effective governance and long-term planning.
Alongside these issues, Sarma presented an optimistic vision for the economic future of the Northeast, positioning Assam as a key gateway for investment and growth. He said the region possesses significant advantages, including abundant natural resources, access to international borders and proximity to emerging markets. According to him, creating a business-friendly environment will be crucial to attracting industries and accelerating development.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the next two decades would belong to Eastern and Northeastern India if the right industrial ecosystem is created. He highlighted ongoing efforts to attract investments and develop modern infrastructure across Assam.
Speaking about the state's growing industrial ambitions, Sarma said the Tata Semiconductor facility at Jagiroad is expected to begin operations later this year. He noted that the project would mark a major milestone in Assam’s industrial transformation and contribute significantly to India's semiconductor ecosystem. He further stated that the facility is expected to manufacture and export millions of semiconductor chips, strengthening Assam’s position in advanced technology manufacturing.
Sarma also spoke about the importance of fostering a positive mindset towards development. He said the region had historically faced neglect and deprivation but was now witnessing a shift driven by infrastructure development, industrial investments and improved connectivity. According to him, positivity and confidence will play a critical role in shaping the region’s future growth trajectory.
Highlighting economic indicators, the Chief Minister claimed that Assam’s growth rate is currently outpacing the national average and expressed confidence that the Northeast will emerge as a major contributor to India's economic expansion in the coming years.
On the political front, Sarma predicted a strong performance for the Bharatiya Janata Party in Eastern and Northeastern India in the 2029 general elections. He also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s long-term approach to governance, stating that the government's focus extends beyond immediate electoral cycles and is aimed at shaping the country's future over the next several decades.
