Assam has recorded a major improvement in school education performance after climbing from 27th to 12th position in the Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0 released by the Ministry of Education.
According to the latest report, Assam improved its overall score from 511.5 to 593.6, moving from the “Akanshi-2” category to the “Prachesta-3” category. The improvement is being seen as one of the sharpest gains among Indian states in recent years.
The Performance Grading Index evaluates states and Union Territories on multiple indicators related to school education, including learning outcomes, infrastructure, access, equity, governance, and teacher education. Assam secured “Uttam” grades in the categories of access, equity, and governance.
The rise in rankings comes amid several reforms and initiatives undertaken by the state government in the education sector. These include expansion of school infrastructure, introduction of digital monitoring systems, recruitment drives, and implementation of reforms linked to the National Education Policy (NEP).
The government has also focused on reducing school dropout rates and improving administrative tracking systems for schools and teachers across the state.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the achievement reflected sustained policy focus and institutional efforts in strengthening Assam’s education system.
Education Minister Ranoj Pegu credited teachers, students, and officials of the education department for the state’s improved performance in the national index.
The report also highlighted varied performance trends among northeastern states. Meghalaya ranked last in the country with a score of 417.9 and remained in the “Akanshi-3” category, facing challenges in infrastructure, governance, and learning outcomes.
Meanwhile, Tripura and Sikkim remained in the middle performance categories, while Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh registered moderate improvements in their scores. Mizoram and Manipur continued to remain in lower performance bands in several education indicators.
The PGI 2.0 report is prepared annually by the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Union Ministry of Education and assesses the performance of states and Union Territories across 73 indicators related to school education.
