The transformation of Northeast India has emerged as one of the key highlights of the Narendra Modi government's development agenda over the past 12 years. Guided by the principles of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas,” the government has focused on improving connectivity, infrastructure and economic opportunities across the region.
Once associated with challenges such as insurgency, blockades and limited connectivity, the Northeast has witnessed significant changes through sustained investments and policy interventions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has placed particular emphasis on the region, visiting the Northeast more than 83 times during his tenure.
A major focus of the government's efforts has been strengthening connectivity in remote and hilly areas. Improved road, rail and air links have helped integrate the region more closely with the rest of the country, while also boosting tourism and creating new livelihood opportunities for local communities.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), more than ₹47,270 crore has been invested in the Northeast, resulting in the construction of over 46,290 kilometres of rural roads. These projects have improved access to markets, healthcare and educational institutions in previously isolated areas.
The aviation sector has also witnessed substantial growth. Over the past 12 years, eight new Greenfield airports have been developed in the region. While the Northeast had nine airports in 2014, the number has now increased to 17. Under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme, 90 routes along with 12 airports and heliports have been operationalised, enhancing air connectivity across the region.
Railway infrastructure has similarly undergone rapid expansion. More than 4,170 kilometres of railway lines have been electrified in the Northeast. Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura and Mizoram have achieved 100 per cent railway electrification.
The region has also recorded several historic milestones in rail connectivity. The first freight train reached Manipur in 2022, Meghalaya in 2023 and Mizoram in 2025, marking significant progress in integrating these states with the national railway network.
Development efforts have also been supported through the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE), under which ₹6,600 crore has been allocated to accelerate growth and infrastructure development.
Residents and educationists in the region have acknowledged improvements in connectivity. Dr. MQ Khan, Principal of Dera Natung Government College in Itanagar, noted improvements in air connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh. Similarly, residents of Guwahati have highlighted the positive impact of enhanced road and air infrastructure.
The government's initiatives have contributed to positioning the eight Northeastern states, often referred to as ‘Ashtalakshmi’, as an emerging growth engine of the country. Improved connectivity, infrastructure development and targeted investments have helped create new opportunities and strengthened the region’s role in India's broader development story.
