A 25-year-old woman was found dead inside a rented flat in Guwahati’s Hatigaon area on Sunday, September 6, with police suspecting that she may have been murdered.
The deceased was identified as Riya Talukdar Goswami. Her body was recovered from a third-floor flat at Anjali Griha in Basisthapur Bylane after her family alerted the police about the incident.
Personnel from Hatigaon Police Station reached the premises and began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Riya’s death. Preliminary findings reportedly indicated that the room was in a disordered condition, while bloodstains were also found on the floor.
Police are examining the available evidence to determine the exact cause of death and establish the sequence of events inside the flat.
Riya’s husband, Ramanujan Goswami, has emerged as the prime suspect in the case and is reportedly absconding. Police have launched a search to trace him and determine his whereabouts.
According to reports, Goswami works as an Uber driver, and the couple had been living in the rented accommodation for around six months.
Residents of the building told police that the couple allegedly had frequent arguments. Neighbours also reported hearing loud disturbances from the flat on Saturday, followed by what sounded like a woman crying.
Residents further said that only Ramanujan’s voice was heard during the disturbance and that he allegedly appeared frightened and distressed at the time.
Investigators are now collecting forensic and other evidence from the flat and questioning neighbours and people familiar with the couple as part of the ongoing probe.
Police have not yet established the exact circumstances or cause of Riya’s death. Efforts are continuing to trace her husband, while investigators examine the evidence gathered from the scene and statements from those living nearby.
