In response to increasing environmental degradation, authorities under Hima Sohra in Meghalaya have announced a ban on open picnicking, cooking, and outdoor dining along the Mawkdok-Sohra Road and nearby areas. The move comes after repeated complaints about irresponsible tourist behaviour, particularly excessive littering and waste dumping.
According to the Syiem Khynnah of Hima Sohra, Paiem Maremdor Syiem, these practices have posed a serious threat to the fragile ecosystem of Sohra (formerly Cherrapunji), a region globally recognized for its natural beauty and biodiversity.
“The local Dorbar Shnong has taken this step to protect Sohra’s environment and ensure sustainable tourism. All outdoor leisure activities are now restricted to designated, approved areas,” the Syiem stated.
Key Measures Enforced:
Ban on open-air cooking, picnicking, and dining along roadsides and forested zones.
Mandatory waste bags for all vehicles entering Sohra, regardless of their state registration.
Strict prohibition of public food or alcohol consumption inside parked vehicles.
Ban on waste disposal on open grounds or roadsides.
Night camping allowed only in approved areas; unauthorized camping strictly disallowed unless hosted by recognised entities.
Additionally, trekkers venturing into areas under Ka Hima Sohra’s jurisdiction must now hire local guides, a move aimed at supporting local livelihoods while ensuring safety and environmental compliance.
The Hima Sohra Tourism Committee has also placed restrictions on vloggers, influencers, and media outlets, prohibiting them from promoting undisclosed or ecologically sensitive locations without prior permission.
