Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Mizoram and Manipur on September 13, officials in Aizawl said on Monday. The visit will begin in Mizoram, where the Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang railway line, a critical project under the Centre’s Act East Policy.
The new line will connect Aizawl with the national railway network through Silchar in Assam, significantly improving accessibility and trade opportunities for the landlocked state. State officials said preparations are underway for a public inauguration ceremony at Lammaul in Aizawl, where government employees, farmers, and students are expected to participate.
After Mizoram, Modi is likely to travel to Manipur, marking his first visit to the state since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023. Officials in Imphal, however, said they have not yet received formal confirmation of the visit.
Mizoram Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena on Monday chaired a high-level review meeting with departments and security agencies to oversee arrangements, including traffic management and security protocols for the Prime Minister’s programme.
The possible Manipur leg of the tour carries political and symbolic significance. The state has been under President’s rule since February 13, 2025, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. Ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have since claimed at least 60 lives, displaced thousands, and left large-scale damage in their wake. The Assembly remains under suspended animation until 2027.
Officials said security arrangements in both states will be heightened, with special focus on Modi’s potential Manipur visit.
