A tense situation unfolded on Sunday morning in Manipur’s Imphal East district following a violent clash over a land dispute between Meitei and Kuki Villagers. The incident took place around 10 a.m. at Sadu Lampak, near a Kuki village, when a Meitei farmer from Leitanpokpi arrived to plough a paddy field, triggering a confrontation.
According to police sources, the Kuki villagers objected to the farming activity, claiming the land did not belong to the Meitei farmer. The dispute quickly escalated as more residents from the Meitei community arrived at the scene.
Videos that have surfaced on social media show members from both groups confronting one another, with some clips capturing stone-pelting and the use of slingshots. The situation grew increasingly volatile, prompting immediate intervention by security forces.
Personnel from the police department, including the Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) of Imphal East and paramilitary units, were already present in the area and worked swiftly to contain the unrest. Additional reinforcements, led by the district SP, were later dispatched to the site.
To disperse the crowds and prevent further violence, the security forces deployed tear gas shells and mock bombs. Fortunately, no casualties were reported during the clash.
“The situation is under control, and adequate security measures are in place to prevent any further escalation,” the police stated.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and refrain from spreading or believing in unverified information on social media, which could exacerbate tensions. A vigilant watch is being maintained in the area as a preventive measure.
The incident underscores the fragile communal dynamics in parts of Manipur, where disputes over land and identity have often led to conflict.
