Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Accra last night for a landmark State Visit to Ghana, warmly welcomed by President John Dramani Mahama with a ceremonial guard of honour and a 21-gun salute at the airport. The visit, aimed at deepening India-Ghana relations, culminated in the announcement of a Comprehensive Partnership between the two nations.
In restricted and delegation-level talks, the leaders focused on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, digital technology, capacity building, infrastructure, and people-to-people ties. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the growing bilateral trade and Indian investments in Ghana, while also exploring avenues for defence and security collaboration.
Prime Minister Modi and President Mahama committed to strengthening their development partnership through India-supported infrastructure projects and capacity-building initiatives. India offered its expertise in health, pharmaceuticals, Unified Payment Interface (UPI), and skill development to support Ghana’s growth. The leaders also discussed global issues, including UN reforms and the need for stronger international cooperation against terrorism.
Following the talks, four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged, covering culture, standards, Ayurveda and traditional medicine, and the establishment of a joint commission mechanism to further institutionalize bilateral ties.
At a State Banquet hosted by President Mahama, Prime Minister Modi was conferred the prestigious Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, the country’s highest national honour, in recognition of his distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership. The citation was read by Ghana’s Foreign Minister, marking a high point of the visit.
The visit underscores the growing strategic partnership between India and Ghana, setting the stage for enhanced collaboration across multiple sectors.
