Economic Relations Secretary Dammu Ravi has stated that the recently concluded two-day BRICS Summit in Rio De Janeiro holds significant importance in light of rapidly evolving global developments. Speaking to the media, Mr Ravi highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation assumes added significance as India is set to assume the chairmanship of BRICS next year.
During the summit, Prime Minister Modi reiterated a strong call for comprehensive reforms in global governance institutions. “Organisations established in the 20th century are ill-equipped to address the challenges of the 21st century,” Mr Modi stated, emphasizing the urgent need for transformation in institutions such as the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization (WTO). He advocated for these bodies to reflect current geopolitical and economic realities.
Mr Ravi informed that Prime Minister Modi underlined the importance of creating a multipolar and inclusive world order, where emerging voices are given due representation. Mr Modi also suggested establishing a science and research repository within BRICS, aimed at enhancing collaboration among member nations in areas of innovation, sustainability, and development.
In a strong message on global security, Mr Modi condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, describing it as an “onslaught on the entire humanity.” Mr Ravi noted that BRICS member countries stood in solidarity with India, issuing a joint statement of strong condemnation and extending their support in the fight against terrorism.
The summit marks a critical moment for India as it prepares to take over the BRICS presidency next year, reinforcing its role as a key player in shaping the emerging global order.
