Yoga emerged as a symbol of wellness, unity and cultural heritage across India on the occasion of the 12th International Day of Yoga, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma joining Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for a special yoga session along the banks of the Brahmaputra.

Sharing glimpses of the event on social media, Sarma described yoga as Bharat’s gift to the world and an ancient practice that promotes a fit and healthy lifestyle. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for transforming yoga into a global movement through sustained efforts to popularise the discipline across nations.

“This morning, I joined Nirmala Sitharaman ji for a yoga session by the Brahmaputra,” the Chief Minister said, reiterating the importance of embracing yoga as part of everyday life.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the national observance of the 12th International Day of Yoga from Kolkata’s iconic Red Road, where he participated in the Common Yoga Protocol session alongside thousands of yoga practitioners.

Extending his greetings to people across the world, Modi noted that June 21, the longest day of the year in many parts of the world, has evolved into one of humanity’s largest collective celebrations through yoga. He remarked that inspiring scenes of yoga practice were being witnessed from every corner of India, from the Himalayas to the Indian Ocean, and from the Northeast to western India.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister said yoga has emerged as a powerful force connecting people across regions, cultures and nations through a shared commitment to health, harmony and well-being.

Modi also praised the people of Kolkata for their efforts under the “Swachhta Se Swagat” initiative, describing their dedication to cleanliness and civic responsibility as an example for the rest of the country.

Highlighting West Bengal’s rich spiritual legacy, the Prime Minister recalled the contributions of Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Swami Vivekananda, Maharshi Aurobindo and Lahiri Mahasaya in spreading India’s spiritual and yogic traditions. He said yoga is not merely a physical exercise but a pathway to consciousness, vitality and inner growth.

Referring to this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” Modi said the ancient practice offers a sustainable way to remain healthy, active and energetic throughout life. He emphasized that yoga transcends age barriers and continues to serve as a source of physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

The nationwide celebrations once again reflected yoga’s growing global appeal and its role as one of India’s most influential cultural contributions to the world.
