Assam is poised to emerge as a major player in India’s semiconductor industry, with the state set to begin production of semiconductor chips this year from the upcoming Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Facility at Jagiroad. The development is being seen as a significant milestone in Assam’s industrial growth and a major contribution to the country’s efforts to build a robust domestic semiconductor ecosystem.
Highlighting the scale of the project, Assam Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah stated that the facility will have the capacity to manufacture 48 million semiconductor chips every day once it becomes operational. The ₹27,000 crore project is expected to place Assam among India’s leading technology manufacturing destinations and strengthen the country's position in the global semiconductor value chain.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that Made-in-Assam semiconductor chips will begin rolling out this year, marking a new chapter in the state's industrial journey. The facility is expected to support a wide range of industries by supplying chips used in consumer electronics, automobiles, telecommunications and other advanced digital technologies.
Beyond manufacturing, the project is expected to have a substantial impact on employment and economic development in the state. According to the state government, the semiconductor facility is likely to create between 26,000 and 27,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. The project is expected to open new avenues for skilled and aspiring professionals while contributing to the growth of a technology-driven workforce.
Officials have also emphasised the project's potential to reduce the outmigration of talented youth by creating high-quality career opportunities within Assam. To support the emerging semiconductor ecosystem, the government is focusing on skill development initiatives and specialised training programmes. Institutions such as the proposed National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) centre are expected to play an important role in preparing a skilled workforce for the sector.
The Jagiroad semiconductor facility represents a significant shift in Assam’s industrial landscape, moving beyond traditional sectors and embracing advanced manufacturing technologies. As preparations continue for the commencement of production, the project is being viewed as a landmark initiative that could position Assam at the forefront of India’s semiconductor ambitions.
With an expected production capacity of 48 million chips per day, the facility is set to become one of the key pillars supporting India’s technological and manufacturing future.
