A tragic incident unfolded in South Salmara Mankachar district, Assam, where a policeman lost his life by drowning in the Brahmaputra River. The unfortunate incident occurred in the Kasharipara Char area during a police team’s boat journey to the Bondihana area.

The police team, including the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) HQ, DSP Probationer, and an escort party of 5-6 members, intended to conduct an awareness camp against child marriage and illegal drugs in the remote Bondihana area. However, tragedy struck when the policeman, identified as Kushal Kalita, slipped from the boat and fell into the river.

Efforts were made by locals to save him, with some jumping into the river and throwing a life jacket. Despite these attempts, Kalita drowned. Superintendent of Police Horen Tokbi expressed sorrow over the unfortunate incident, stating that the police immediately informed the Border Security Force (BSF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and senior officials.
