In a significant moment for political representation from Assam, Pramod Boro, Jogen Mohan, and Teras Goala were sworn in as Members of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
The swearing-in ceremony reflected the linguistic and cultural diversity of Assam, with each leader choosing to take the oath in their native language. Jogen Mohan, a senior leader and former state minister, took his oath in Assamese, highlighting his strong connection to the state’s cultural roots. Pramod Boro, former Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Council, followed by taking his oath in the Bodo language, underscoring the growing representation of the Bodo community in national politics.
Teras Goala, representing the Tea Tribe community, drew significant attention for his unconventional arrival at Parliament. Choosing to arrive on a bicycle instead of using an official vehicle, Goala’s gesture was widely seen as a reflection of his grounded political approach and connection with grassroots communities.
Speaking to reporters, Goala said he intends to use his first salary as a Member of Parliament to purchase a bicycle, symbolising his commitment to remain connected to his roots and the people he represents.
The induction of the three leaders into the Rajya Sabha marks an important development in strengthening the voice of Northeast India in Parliament, with representation spanning key communities and regions of Assam.
