The West Bengal government is likely to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the state Assembly next week, a move that could mark a significant development in the state's legal framework. If the legislation is passed, West Bengal will join states such as Assam, Uttarakhand and Gujarat that have initiated measures aimed at establishing a common set of personal laws across different communities.
The push for a Uniform Civil Code has gained momentum in recent years, with Uttarakhand becoming the first state to enact a UCC law. Assam has also emerged as one of the key states advancing reforms aligned with the objectives of a Uniform Civil Code.
The Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has introduced a series of legal and administrative reforms in recent years that are viewed as steps towards implementing a Uniform Civil Code. These include legislation to prohibit child marriage, reforms relating to marriage registration, restrictions on polygamy in government employment, and changes in laws governing personal and family matters.
Chief Minister Sarma has repeatedly stated that Assam supports the principle of a Uniform Civil Code and has maintained that the state is pursuing sector-specific legal reforms that promote uniformity, gender justice and equal rights while remaining within the constitutional framework.
The proposed Bill in West Bengal is expected to revive political and legal debate over the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code across states. The subject continues to attract national attention as more states explore legal reforms aimed at creating a common civil framework governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption.
