Celebrated astrophysicist Dr. Jayant Narlikar, known for his groundbreaking contributions to astronomy and scientific education, passed away this morning at the age of 86 in Pune, leaving behind a legacy that has shaped India’s scientific landscape.
The news of his death prompted an outpouring of tributes from political leaders across Maharashtra, acknowledging his monumental contributions to science and education in India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the demise of veteran astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar. In a social media post, Mr Modi called Mr Narlikar’s demise a monumental loss to the scientific community. He wrote that Mr Narlikar was a luminary, especially in the field of astrophysics and his pioneering works, especially key theoretical frameworks, will be valued by generations of researchers. The Prime Minister added that Mr Narlikar made a mark as an institution builder, grooming centres of learning and innovation for young minds.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid homage to the departed scientist, describing his death as a profound loss for Indian astronomy. “With his demise, Indian astronomy has lost one of its most prominent pioneers,” Fadnavis remarked, adding that “Dr. Narlikar illuminated India’s science-driven identity and demonstrated the significance of astronomy.”
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar highlighted Dr. Narlikar’s lifelong dedication to fostering scientific thinking among younger generations. “Dr. Narlikar worked tirelessly throughout his life to instil scientific principles, rational thinking, and a scientific outlook in the younger generation,” Pawar said. He particularly noted the scientist’s exceptional ability to explain complex scientific concepts in accessible terms, stating that Narlikar “had a unique ability to explain the mysteries of science to children in a simple and accessible manner.”
In a poetic tribute, Pawar added, “With his passing, a radiant star dedicated to the spread of knowledge and science has faded from the nation’s scientific sky.”
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasized the significance of Dr. Narlikar’s work to India and expressed pride in his achievements as “a proud son of Maharashtra,” noting that his remarkable progress in astronomy brought immense pride to the state.
NCP leader Sharad Pawar also shared his condolences on social media, highlighting Dr. Narlikar’s respected status in the scientific community. “Among the contributions of Marathi scientists at the national and international levels, Dr. Narlikar’s name is always spoken with deep respect and honour,” Pawar wrote. He specifically mentioned the Hoyle-Narlikar theory, developed in collaboration with renowned British scientist Sir Fred Hoyle, describing it as a work of “great significance in the scientific community.”
Pawar also acknowledged Dr. Narlikar’s institutional contributions, particularly his pivotal role at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), noting that he provided “vital direction” to scientific research in India.
Dr. Narlikar’s work extended beyond pure research; he was known for his efforts to popularize science and astronomy through numerous books and articles written in both English and Marathi. His ability to bridge the gap between complex astrophysical concepts and public understanding made him a beloved figure in science education.
