Defence Minister Rajnath Singh participated in the International Yoga Day celebrations at the Eastern Air Command headquarters in Shillong, emphasizing the unifying power of yoga and urging people to make the ancient practice an integral part of their daily lives.
Addressing participants during the event, Singh said yoga has emerged as a force that brings humanity together by transcending geographical, cultural and national boundaries. He noted that the practice connects people across countries and continents while promoting physical well-being, mental balance and social harmony.
“Yoga brings the entire humanity together as it unites people across the country and continents. I urge everyone to make yoga an integral part of their routine,” the Defence Minister said.
The event at Eastern Air Command was held as part of the nationwide observance of the 12th International Day of Yoga, which witnessed large-scale participation across India and around the world. Personnel of the Indian Air Force and other participants joined the celebrations in Shillong, performing yoga exercises and promoting the message of healthy living.
Following his engagements in Meghalaya, Rajnath Singh travelled to Guwahati before returning to New Delhi. At the Air Force Station in Borjhar, he was received by Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu.
Sharing details of the meeting on social media, Pegu said he had the privilege of welcoming the Defence Minister with a traditional Assamese gamosa, a symbol of the state's cultural heritage and hospitality.
“Received Hon’ble Defence Minister of India, Shri Rajnath Singh Ji, at the Air Force Station, Borjhar, Guwahati, and had the privilege of welcoming him with a traditional Gamocha. He was returning to New Delhi after his visit to Meghalaya,” Pegu said.
The visit highlighted the significance of International Yoga Day celebrations in the Northeast, with senior leaders participating in events aimed at promoting wellness and encouraging wider adoption of yoga as a way of life.
International Yoga Day, observed annually on June 21, has grown into a global movement since its adoption by the United Nations in 2014. This year's celebrations focused on the theme of healthy living and holistic well-being, drawing participation from millions across the world.
