The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) marked the International Day of Yoga 2026 with a series of unique yoga sessions held aboard vessels operating on the Brahmaputra River across Assam. The programmes were organised on June 21 as part of the nationwide observance of the annual event.

The celebrations took place at multiple locations along National Waterway-2 (River Brahmaputra), bringing together IWAI officials, employees and members of local communities to participate in yoga sessions amid the scenic river landscape.

In Guwahati, officials and staff of IWAI performed the Common Yoga Protocol aboard the vessels MPT Sukhdev and HPT B.R. Ambedkar while sailing on the Brahmaputra from Pandu. Similar programmes were also organised at Jogighopa aboard WB Saffron and at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh aboard WB Iris and WB Tansy.

The initiative combined the observance of International Day of Yoga with the promotion of India’s inland waterways network, highlighting the significance of both physical well-being and sustainable river-based connectivity.

Participants performed various yoga postures and breathing exercises as part of the Common Yoga Protocol, reflecting the growing popularity of yoga as a tool for maintaining physical fitness and mental wellness.

Speaking on the occasion, Prabin Bora, Director (I/C), Regional Office Guwahati, IWAI, said yoga has evolved into a global movement dedicated to health and wellness. He noted that celebrating the International Day of Yoga on the Brahmaputra symbolises IWAI’s commitment to encouraging healthy lifestyles while showcasing the importance of the country's inland waterways.

Observed this year under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, the programme focused on promoting regular yoga practice as an effective means of maintaining health and well-being across all age groups. The event also served to raise awareness about the benefits of yoga in improving flexibility, reducing stress and supporting overall wellness.

The celebrations on the Brahmaputra added a distinctive dimension to the International Day of Yoga observances in Assam, bringing together wellness, community participation and the region’s rich riverine heritage.
