A major pileup on the Delhi-Agra Expressway in Mathura district killed four people and injured more than 25 on Tuesday after dense fog reduced visibility to near zero, causing seven buses and three cars to collide in a chain reaction.
Several vehicles caught fire following the collision, creating chaos at the scene as passengers scrambled to escape the burning wreckage.
Massive Rescue Operation Launched
Police and district administration officials rushed to the accident site immediately. Authorities deployed 11 fire tenders and 14 ambulances for relief and rescue operations.
The District Magistrate, Senior Superintendent of Police, Circle Officer, and Sub-Divisional Magistrate personally supervised rescue efforts at the scene.
How the Accident Unfolded
According to preliminary reports, one vehicle was initially involved in an accident, triggering a chain of collisions as buses and cars approaching from behind crashed into each other due to extremely poor visibility.
Three to four buses caught fire after the impact. All buses involved were reportedly fully occupied at the time of the accident.
Survivors Recount Terror
One passenger described waking to chaos aboard his bus. “I was sleeping when I suddenly heard a loud explosion, and then fire spread, causing panic among the passengers,” he recounted.
Injured Receiving Treatment
More than 25 injured passengers have been admitted to hospital, with their conditions currently reported as stable. Several others sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the scene.
The accident highlights the dangers of winter fog on India’s expressways, where reduced visibility frequently leads to deadly pileups during the colder months.
