The family of Flight Lieutenant Shubham Kumar, who lost his life in a recent Indian Air Force aircraft crash in Assam, has raised concerns over the distribution of compensation benefits following his death. What began as a period of mourning and national tribute has now evolved into a dispute over the handling of financial assistance provided after the officer’s martyrdom.
Flight Lieutenant Shubham Kumar died while carrying out an operational mission when the Air Force aircraft associated with him crashed in Assam. His mortal remains were brought to his native village, where he was cremated with full military honours. Tributes poured in from across the country as people paid their respects to the fallen officer.
However, shortly after the funeral, questions emerged regarding a compensation cheque reportedly worth ₹21 lakh. The controversy began when Shubham’s father, Amarendra Sharma, alleged that the family had not been informed that the compensation amount had been issued to Shreya Rai, a woman whom the family says was in a relationship with the officer.
According to family members, they were aware of the relationship and had accepted it. They claimed that discussions regarding marriage had already taken place between the two families and preparations were underway for a wedding later this year. However, the family stated that the ceremony was postponed following the death of Shubham’s grandmother.
After the officer’s death, Shreya Rai accompanied his mortal remains to the village and participated in the funeral and last rites along with family members. The issue surfaced later when Amarendra Sharma reportedly learned that the compensation cheque had already been handed over to her.
The grieving father questioned the process through which the financial assistance was distributed, alleging that no prior official communication had been made with the family. He stated that he became aware of the matter only after returning home following the funeral proceedings. According to him, subsequent inquiries with local authorities confirmed that the cheque had been issued to Shreya Rai.
The development has triggered discussion in the officer’s hometown, with family members seeking clarity and transparency regarding the procedures followed in distributing compensation benefits. The matter has continued to attract public attention as questions remain over the administrative and legal framework governing financial assistance provided to the families of personnel who lose their lives in service.
