From a humble village near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border to the laboratories of Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital, Dr. Rubul Mout's journey is one of determination, scientific excellence and an unwavering commitment to education and society.
Currently serving as a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital, Dr. Mout is engaged in cutting-edge research in protein design, hematopoietic stem cell biology, T-cell development and immuno-ageing. His work focuses on developing next-generation therapies aimed at strengthening the human immune system to combat cancer, autoimmune disorders and viral diseases.
Born and educated in India, Dr. Mout moved to the United States to pursue his Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Before joining Harvard, he served as a Washington Research Foundation Innovation Fellow at the Institute for Protein Design at the University of Washington, where he worked alongside leading scientists in computational protein engineering.
One of his most notable scientific achievements came in 2025, when he led research on AI-designed soluble Notch agonists that promote T-cell development and enhance immune responses. Published in the prestigious journal Cell, the study represented a major advance in computational protein design and immune engineering. The research was carried out in collaboration with Nobel Laureate Dr. David Baker and Harvard Medical School Dean Dr. George Q. Daley.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Mout has co-authored more than 40 scientific papers and is the inventor of multiple technologies in gene editing, protein design and T-cell engineering. During his doctoral research, he developed the "E-tag" intracellular protein delivery and gene-editing technology, which has been recognised through scientific publications and patents. His work has also been featured by Nature, the American Chemical Society, LabTV/NIH and several international science platforms.
Beyond the laboratory, Dr. Mout remains deeply connected to his roots in Assam. He is the author of two Assamese books, including the bestselling memoir Moro Eta Sapon Ase, which chronicles his remarkable journey from a financially challenged rural upbringing to becoming a scientist at one of the world's leading medical institutions. Since its publication in 2017, the memoir has sold more than 60,000 copies and has been included in the curriculum of several schools, colleges and universities across Assam.
His commitment to education extends beyond writing. Dr. Mout founded Uplift Libraries, an initiative that has established small libraries for children in rural India, helping improve access to books and learning opportunities for underprivileged students. The initiative currently operates multiple libraries serving rural communities.
He also mentors aspiring scientists through Sunday Science Activism, a free weekly online outreach programme where he interacts with college and university students from around the world, offering guidance on careers in science, research and higher education.
Through his pioneering scientific research, educational outreach and literary contributions, Dr. Rubul Mout has emerged as one of Assam's most accomplished scientists on the global stage. His journey continues to inspire thousands of young researchers and students, demonstrating that perseverance, curiosity and a passion for learning can overcome even the most difficult beginnings.
