Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri conducted a comprehensive review meeting on Tuesday to assess the ongoing well control activities at the state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) facility in Sivasagar district, Assam, where a fire incident at well RDS#1447A has prompted large-scale emergency response operations.
Speaking about the current situation, Minister Puri confirmed that ONGC has mobilized competent personnel from multiple operational centres across the country to tackle the well fire. The response team has deployed high-capacity fire pumps, frack pumps, and specialized drilling muds at the site as part of comprehensive fire suppression efforts.

“All necessary equipment and expertise are being brought to bear on this situation,” Puri stated, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to bringing the incident under control swiftly and safely.
The fire control operations have incorporated cutting-edge techniques, including junk pumping methods designed to seal the well and prevent further fuel supply to the flames. ONGC technical teams are maintaining continuous communication with international petroleum industry experts to ensure the most effective strategies are being employed.
To maintain operational safety and prevent fire spread, emergency teams are continuously maintaining a water blanket around the affected area, providing crucial cooling effects and serving as a protective barrier.
The safety of local communities has remained paramount throughout the emergency response. Authorities immediately evacuated residents from the vicinity of the well site, with Minister Puri confirming that all displaced individuals are receiving adequate relief assistance and support services.
The evacuation process was conducted as a precautionary measure to protect civilian lives while allowing emergency teams unrestricted access to conduct their operations.
The situation continues to be closely monitored at the highest levels, with ONGC officials maintaining round-the-clock supervision of the well control activities. The company’s emergency response protocols remain fully activated as teams work to achieve complete containment of the incident.
