The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted autonomous status to Lakhimpur Girls’ College, North Lakhimpur, for a five-year period beginning in the 2025–2026 academic session, according to an official letter dated August 4, 2025.
The decision follows a UGC meeting on June 24, 2025, where the Standing Committee on Autonomous Colleges approved the college’s proposal under Dibrugarh University, Assam.
As per the UGC directive, Lakhimpur Girls’ College will function as an autonomous institution until the 2029–2030 academic year. The move enables the college to independently design curricula, conduct examinations, and manage academic affairs, while remaining affiliated with Dibrugarh University.
The college must adhere strictly to the UGC’s Conferment of Autonomous Status Upon Colleges and Measures for Maintenance of Standards in Autonomous Colleges Regulations, 2023. Non-compliance could invite punitive action under Clause 13 of the same regulations.
Dibrugarh University has been instructed to issue the formal notification conferring autonomy within 30 days. The college is also required to seek an extension at least three months prior to the expiration of the autonomy period, should it wish to continue under the autonomous framework.
Lakhimpur Girls’ College, established in North Lakhimpur and known for its focus on women’s education, plays a key role in advancing higher education in Assam’s Lakhimpur district. The autonomous status is expected to further enhance its academic flexibility and innovation in teaching and assessment.
