In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the escalating human-elephant conflict in Assam’s Golaghat district has claimed two lives and left one person seriously injured. On Friday night, 65-year-old Binod Majhi of Gidi Basti was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Morangi Mouza, under the Bakiyal range of the Forest Department.
Another fatal incident was reported at a private tea garden, where Devcharan Nuniya, a security personnel, died on the spot during an elephant attack. The circumstances suggest he was on duty when the tragedy struck.
The violence didn’t stop there. In Sonapur Hahara, a man named Dhan Bora sustained serious injuries in a separate elephant encounter. He was immediately referred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for advanced treatment.
Over the past several days, wild elephants have been straying into human settlements from nearby forests, driven by food scarcity. This has led to widespread panic and property damage in areas including Morangi and Numaligarh.
Local residents report sleepless nights and a growing sense of fear. “We hear the elephants almost every night. They come in groups, destroy crops, break fences, and sometimes even attack houses,” said a villager from Numaligarh.
