Three former MLAs of Assam joined the Congress on Monday, with the party leadership expressing confidence that the state is heading toward a “major change” in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Satyabrat Kalita, Binanda Kumar Saikia, and Manas Singh Rongpi formally entered the party at Indira Bhawan in Guwahati in the presence of Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi, AICC general secretary in charge of Assam Bhanwar Jitendra Singh, and AICC general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal.
The people of Assam know that Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government is no longer a people’s government, it has turned into his private firm. That is why leaders who truly believe in public service are leaving the BJP and joining the Congress.

“Influenced by the ideology of the Congress Party, three former MLAs have joined the Indian National Congress. It’s a very good beginning for the Assam PCC. It’s a clear sign of change in Assam’s politics,” Venugopal said during the induction ceremony.
He added that the Congress is confident of making gains in the 2026 Assembly elections, accusing the BJP of “misusing power and playing with people’s sentiments.”
Party leaders said the induction of the former legislators marks part of a broader strategy to rebuild the Congress in Assam, where it has been out of power since 2016.
