To ensure peaceful public movement and uninterrupted functioning of offices, a prohibitory order under section 144 of the CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure) has been enforced across Guwahati, Assam, as per official statements released on Sunday.
This decision, aiming to maintain tranquillity and normalcy, has led to a ban on assemblies of more than five individuals and the shouting of slogans within the jurisdiction of the Police Commissionerate.
Imdad Ali, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Admin), has issued this order, stressing its necessity due to potential disturbances that could be caused by certain groups planning agitations, demonstrations, or slogan-shouting.
Such activities, Ali expressed, could pose a threat to public order, disrupt peaceful public movement, interrupt the normal activities of local residents, and hinder the functioning of offices within the Police Commissionerate.
Highlighting the concern for public welfare and smooth traffic flow, Ali added, “It is necessary to take preventive measures to ensure peaceful movement of the public, traffic, and also normal activities of local residents and also functioning of offices in the above-mentioned area.”
Under the authority conferred upon him by Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, and the government of Assam, Ali put forth the specific prohibitory guidelines. The orders restrict any assembly of more than five persons and any form of procession or slogan-shouting across the entire Guwahati Police Commissionerate area, encompassing three Police Districts.
The imposition of this order reflects the administration’s commitment to uphold public order and ensure the smooth functioning of day-to-day activities in Guwahati. The public is advised to follow the new regulations for their safety and the betterment of the city.
