Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a fierce attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a party workers’ meeting in Chaygaon, accusing him of corruption and predicting that the people of Assam would hold him accountable. With the 2026 Assam Assembly elections on the horizon, Gandhi’s remarks signal an aggressive campaign by the Congress against the BJP-led state government.
Gandhi accused Sarma of behaving like a “raja” and claimed that public anger over alleged corruption by the Chief Minister and his family would lead to his downfall. “Fear is evident on your Chief Minister’s face. He knows that fearless Congress workers will ensure justice is served,” said Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He asserted that the people of Assam would “put him in jail” for his alleged misdeeds.
The Congress leader also raised concerns about electoral integrity, accusing the Election Commission of colluding with the BJP. He pointed to alleged voter list manipulation in Maharashtra and warned that similar tactics could be used in Assam and Bihar. “They cheated in Maharashtra, and they are planning the same in Assam. We must stay vigilant,” Gandhi cautioned.
Aiming at the media, Gandhi alleged that it has abandoned its role as the voice of the people, focusing instead on promoting industrialists like Adani and Ambani, as well as BJP leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. “The media no longer reveals the truth,” he claimed.
Despite these challenges, Gandhi expressed confidence in the Congress’s prospects, predicting a sweeping victory in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. “This manipulation won’t work. We will sweep the assembly elections next year,” he declared.
Gandhi framed the political contest as an ideological battle, contrasting the “hatred and violence” of the RSS with the “truth and non-violence” of the Congress. He also highlighted growing economic inequality, describing India as divided into “two Hindustans” — one of billionaires indulging in lavish weddings and another of ordinary citizens grappling with rising taxes and inflation.
As the Congress intensifies its campaign in Assam, Gandhi’s remarks underscore the party’s strategy to capitalize on public discontent and position itself as a formidable challenger to the BJP in the 2026 elections.
