Assam is set to host a landmark diplomatic and business engagement as Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is expected to visit Guwahati in early July along with a high-powered delegation comprising executives from around 50 Japanese companies and organisations.
According to sources in the Assam government and the Centre, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart are likely to hold delegation-level talks in Guwahati, with discussions expected to take place around July 1. The visit is being viewed as one of the most significant international engagements ever hosted by a northeastern state.
The summit is expected to focus on strengthening economic cooperation between India and Japan, with investment, supply chain resilience and strategic infrastructure likely to dominate the agenda. Sources indicate that both sides may sign agreements in sectors such as semiconductors, renewable energy and automobiles.
The discussions are also expected to cover Japan’s financial support for India’s strategic oil reserves. Japanese officials had earlier expressed interest in contributing to India's energy security initiatives, including possible cooperation through Japan’s Partnership on Wide Energy and Resources Resilience (POWERR Asia) and the Southeast Asia Investment Financing Facility.
Japanese media reports suggest that the delegation accompanying Takaichi will include senior executives from major corporations, including Suzuki Motor Corporation President Toshihiro Suzuki. The presence of leading business figures is expected to provide momentum to ongoing economic and industrial cooperation between the two countries.
The choice of Guwahati as the venue for the bilateral summit carries considerable strategic significance. While former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Varanasi in 2015, it remains rare for a summit involving the Indian and Japanese Prime Ministers to be held outside New Delhi. The decision highlights the growing importance of Northeast India in India's economic and geopolitical strategy.
The visit comes at a time when Japan is increasingly focused on developments in the Indo-Pacific region and is seeking to strengthen partnerships with like-minded countries. Analysts view the engagement as part of broader efforts to deepen strategic cooperation amid evolving regional dynamics.
Assam's emergence as an investment destination is also expected to feature prominently during the discussions. The state is home to India's first indigenous semiconductor facility in Morigaon district, led by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test, making it a key location in India's semiconductor ambitions.
The proposed summit also aligns with Japan's long-term vision for regional connectivity and industrial development. In 2023, then Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida outlined a strategy to build an industrial value chain connecting Northeast India, the Bay of Bengal and the wider Indo-Pacific region. The initiative envisioned Northeast India as a critical growth hub linked to neighbouring economies, including Bangladesh.
India and Japan have continued to strengthen economic ties in recent years. During Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Japan in August 2025, Japan committed to facilitating private investments worth 10 trillion yen in India over a ten-year period.
