In a significant diplomatic development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed Nukaga Fukushiro, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Japan, and his high-level delegation to the northeastern state on Saturday. The visit is being hailed as a major milestone in strengthening ties between Assam and Japan.
CM Sarma received the distinguished Japanese delegation at his office in Lok Sewa Bhawan, describing the visit as “a testament to deepening ties between Assam and Japan.”
“I consider it my honour to welcome the Speaker and his delegation to our beautiful state Assam,” said Sarma during the meeting. “This visit will also encourage Japanese companies to look to Assam and other North Eastern states for enhancing the collaboration.”

The Chief Minister emphasized that this diplomatic engagement will provide fresh momentum to Assam’s strategic partnership with Japan, particularly in the context of the upcoming Advantage Assam 2.0 initiative. During the discussions, Sarma briefed Fukushiro about Assam’s evolving business ecosystem and investment opportunities.
Referring to his own visit to Japan earlier this year before the Investment and Infrastructure Summit, Sarma highlighted Assam’s readiness to establish a Japanese Language and Testing Centre at the ASEAN One Technical Centre in Kamrup district’s Amingaon. This initiative aims to facilitate employment opportunities for Assamese youth in Japan.
“This is not just a visit – it is a symbol of people-to-people connection and future cooperation,” the Chief Minister remarked.
Sarma also noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed confidence that the Japanese delegation’s visit would help Assam and other northeastern states benefit from the flourishing bilateral relations between India and Japan.
Prior to the meeting, Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota delivered a comprehensive presentation showcasing the state’s business landscape and potential areas for collaboration. He emphasized Assam’s strategic location as a gateway to 35 percent of the world’s population and highlighted numerous opportunities across sectors including industries, tourism, skill development, employment, mines and minerals, environment and forestry, education, healthcare, and innovation.
The meeting was attended by Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Nandita Gorlosa, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, Japanese Ambassador to India Keiichi Ono, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister KK Dwivedi, senior officials, and other dignitaries.
