Assam Police have achieved a major success in their ongoing counter-insurgency operations. A dreaded ULFA (Independent) cadre, Rupam Asom, has been apprehended by the Tinsukia Police near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
According to reports, Rupam Asom was functioning as the operational commander of ULFA (I) and is believed to have played a key role in several militant operations. He is also the prime accused in the brutal killing of Bhaskar Kalita, the Officer-in-Charge of Bordumsa Police Station.
Rupam Asom’s arrest followed a special operation conducted by the Tinsukia Police in the border region. A substantial cache of arms, ammunition, and other incriminating materials was seized from his possession. The police are continuing their search operations in the forested border areas to trace and apprehend his accomplices.
Tinsukia Superintendent of Police, Abhijit Gaurav Dilip, has informally confirmed the arrest and ongoing investigation. It is understood that Assam Police had been tracking Rupam Asom for a long time, and his arrest is being seen as a major blow to ULFA (I)’s network in the region.
Though police have not officially disclosed many details to the media, sources reveal that Rupam Asom is being intensively interrogated. He is suspected to be involved in several criminal activities, including kidnappings and extortion operations carried out in the region.
In response to the arrest, security has been tightened across Tinsukia, and joint operations by the police and paramilitary forces have been intensified in the forested areas. Several top police officials are reportedly overseeing the operations. Meanwhile, the Assam Police continue to monitor the overall situation closely.
