Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport handled a record 952 metric tonnes of cargo in July, marking its highest monthly volume and strengthening its role as a key logistics hub for Northeast India.
According to Guwahati International Airport Limited (GIAL), the figure surpasses the previous record of 841 MT, reflecting a 13.2% increase in overall cargo movement. A 15.26% rise in inbound shipments, led by Delhi and Bengaluru, was the primary driver of this growth.
The domestic cargo terminal’s performance underscores its growing significance in India’s national supply chain. “This milestone is the result of streamlined operations, a skilled workforce, and a customer-first approach,” said a GIAL spokesperson.
Outbound cargo also saw a 5.24% increase, with Agartala and Imphal leading volumes, followed by Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Industry experts attribute the gains to operational efficiency, infrastructure upgrades, and technology-driven process improvements that have enhanced capacity without affecting service quality.
The terminal’s rising throughput is transforming LGBIA into a strategic distribution point for the Northeast, facilitating quicker movement of goods to and from the region’s key markets.
Located in Assam, LGBIA serves as the primary air gateway to the Northeast. The airport’s domestic cargo operations are critical for regional industries, including perishables, pharmaceuticals, and e-commerce, which rely on timely deliveries to metropolitan centers.
With infrastructure expansion and service enhancements underway, GIAL aims to further boost cargo handling capacity in the coming months. The sustained growth positions LGBIA as the premier cargo gateway for Northeast India, contributing significantly to regional economic development.
