In a significant step to ease urban challenges, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has announced that designated parking slots across the city will now offer free parking for two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The GMC made this decision during a meeting held on May 12. The announcement was made by Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania during a press briefing on Thursday.
“We are going to allocate specific spaces in more than 50 parking slots across Guwahati exclusively for two-wheelers and three-wheelers. These vehicles will be allowed to park there free of cost,” said Mayor Sarania.
He expressed hope that this initiative would benefit a large section of the public and help reduce the frequent disagreements and inconveniences faced by two-wheeler riders over parking issues in the city.
Additionally, the GMC is planning to implement the reservation of market spaces for women from Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in markets under its jurisdiction. “We will introduce a system to reserve dedicated spaces for SC and ST women in GMC-managed markets. They will be issued identification certificates, and no lease or rent will be collected from them by contractors,” the Mayor added.
Mayor Sarania stated that this step is aimed not only at empowering women economically but also at promoting the vision of ‘Patharo aamar-Bajaro aamar’, a slogan encouraging local economic participation and ownership.
Experts and citizens alike have welcomed these people-centric measures, seeing them as positive strides toward creating a more inclusive, organized, and accessible urban environment in Guwahati.
