Five police personnel from Bordumsa Police Station in Assam’s Tinsukia district were suspended and the officer-in-charge (OC) transferred following allegations of brutally assaulting a local man, officials confirmed on Sunday.
The incident, which has sparked public protests in the area, reportedly began during Friday’s panchayat election polling when the victim got into an argument with police personnel. According to local sources, the man was subsequently brought to the Bordumsa police station the following night on direct instructions from OC Biswajit Saharia.
In response to the mounting public pressure, Tinsukia Superintendent of Police Gaurav Abhijit Dilip ordered immediate disciplinary action. Two sub-inspectors and three constables were suspended with immediate effect and directed to report to the district headquarters pending further investigation.
Meanwhile, OC Saharia was relieved of his duties and transferred to the reserve line, effectively removing him from active policing responsibilities while the investigation proceeds.
The Superintendent of Police has also ordered a formal inquiry into the incident, appointing Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Margherita, Dinesh Pratap Singh Rathode, to lead the investigation. The SDPO has been instructed to submit a comprehensive report within 48 hours to determine what further action may be necessary.
