To improve pedestrian safety along the busy Guwahati Bypass of National Highway 27, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has begun work on five new foot overbridges equipped with escalators at high-traffic junctions.
The initiative also includes the installation of streetlights along the entire 18-kilometre stretch of the bypass to enhance visibility, especially during nighttime hours.
The five overbridges will be constructed at:
- Jalukbari (near Assam Engineering College)
- Tetelia
- Gorchuk (near CPWD Office)
- Royal Global University Point
- Lalmati (near Games Village)
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the project prioritises safe pedestrian movement, particularly for students and residents in densely populated areas. “This is a major step toward modern and people-centric infrastructure,” he noted on social media.

The overbridges will be fitted with escalators and ramps to ensure accessibility for all, including the elderly and differently-abled. The project is expected to reduce road accidents and ease pedestrian crossing on one of Assam’s busiest highways.
With the upcoming streetlight installation, authorities hope to significantly improve nighttime safety and traffic management along the bypass. Officials said the works will be executed in a phased manner, with completion timelines to be announced soon.
