Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday announced that Dr Habbey Teron, the MLA from the Amri (ST) constituency, has been selected as the ruling alliance’s candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
The announcement was made through the Chief Minister’s official social media handle, where he highlighted the significance of the decision and its role in promoting broader representation within the state’s democratic institutions.
According to Sarma, the nomination reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring greater political participation and strengthening the representation of indigenous and tribal communities in Assam. He stated that the move is in line with the administration’s efforts to promote inclusivity and provide leaders from diverse backgrounds with opportunities to assume key legislative responsibilities.
Dr Teron, a medical practitioner by profession, holds the distinction of being the first elected legislator from the newly created Amri constituency. His nomination is being viewed as an important development for the hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, as it is expected to enhance their representation and visibility within the state legislature.
In his statement, the Chief Minister expressed confidence in Dr Teron’s ability to effectively discharge the responsibilities associated with the office of Deputy Speaker. Sarma noted that the legislator has emerged as a representative of the aspirations and interests of tribal communities and said his elevation would contribute positively to the functioning of the Assembly.
The Chief Minister also extended his best wishes to Dr Teron as he prepares to take on the proposed role. The nomination has drawn attention due to both its administrative and symbolic significance, as it underscores the growing role of Assam’s hill regions in the state’s political landscape.
As the first elected representative from the Amri constituency following its creation, Dr Teron’s selection is being seen as a significant milestone for the region. His proposed appointment to one of the Assembly’s key constitutional positions is expected to strengthen tribal representation and encourage greater participation of hill communities in the legislative process.
The development reflects the government’s emphasis on inclusive governance and broader representation, while also highlighting the increasing importance of tribal and hill constituencies in Assam’s evolving political framework.
