At least three persons were injured in police firing in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district on Monday after violent clashes broke out between protesters and security forces at Dongkamokam.
The incident occurred as agitation over illegal encroachment on protected government lands escalated dramatically following overnight detention of several protesters.
Indefinite Hunger Strike Since December 16
Residents have been agitating for several days demanding that the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council take immediate action against illegal encroachment on protected lands. An indefinite hunger strike began on December 16 to press authorities to address their concerns.
The protesters have demanded eviction of illegal settlers from Village Grant Reserves and Professional Grant Reserves, citing violations of Sixth Schedule protections meant to safeguard indigenous Karbi land rights.
Violence Erupts After Detentions
The situation turned violent on Monday when police attempted to disperse agitators who had launched a massive road blockade. Tensions had already escalated after authorities detained several protesters the previous night.
When police resorted to firing to control the situation, at least three agitators sustained injuries. The action further inflamed the crowd.
CEM’s Ancestral Home Set Ablaze
Enraged protesters set fire to the ancestral house of KAAC Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang. Dongkamokam falls within Ronghang’s constituency, making him a target of the protesters’ anger over perceived inaction on encroachment issues.
Additional Forces Deployed
Additional security forces have been rushed to the area to contain the volatile situation. Authorities are working to restore order as tensions remain high in the hill district.
